Castel d’Escales is a beautiful and unique castle listed on Spain’s register of historic monuments. Comprised of a round keep, or tower, dating from the 11th century surrounded by a more conventional square fortification added in the 14th century, the ‘Castle of Ladders’ once served as home for the Bishop of Barcelona.
Lovingly restored by a Catalan architect, the castle is superbly situated and offers outstanding proximity to the best of Catalunya and the Costa Brava.
From the lookout on top of the medieval tower a panoramic 360-degree view stretches all the way from the Pyrenees Mountains to where they blend with the Mediterranean coast and the French border.
Castel d’Escales provides a relaxed country setting and borders the Cavarres Nature Preserve. Star watching, the springtime call of the cuckoo, and the nightingale’s midnight serenade all add a special element to your stay.
The small village of Celrà, its balconies overflowing with bright flowers and church with medieval sun motif, is within walking distance (5 minutes). A weekly market is also held a short walk from the castle, featuring fresh local produce and regional specialties from olives to espadrilles.
Other picturesque villages throughout the area with weekly open-air markets are close by.

Dessert selections include homemade fruit and herb sorbets and ice creams.
Meals are served alfresco on the large terrace, poolside, or inside the castle’s 14th century vaulted dining room that seats up to 20, depending on your preference. The castle wine cellar is stocked with a selection of boutique wines from local area vineyards. Port, sherry and cocktails are also available on request.
